BlackSplat WordPress Theme

To celebrate the launch of my website I’m making available for free a WordPress theme called BlackSplat that I made last year in association with Tim Holt, a web developer with some mad skills.

Download and/or try it out…
The theme is available over at the official WordPress theme directory. The most recent version will always be over there. You can also try it out live right here and download it here (current version: 1.7).

Changelog…
1.7: Defined the custom gravatar shown to be local to your installation, as suggested by Alex (thanks!). You can modify the default gravatar to show by uploading your desired gravatar.gif image to the ‘images’ folder of the theme.

Fine prints!
This theme is available for free and you can use it for commercial or personal purposes. You can read the GPL license that comes with the theme for more info, or just contact me if you have any questions. Please refrain from using the theme for websites dedicated to: pornography/adult sites, warez, drugs and anything encouraging offensive//illegal behavior…

Credits
If you wish to take the credits off and still show some acknowledgment, it would be sweet of you to proceed with a donation of your choice (any amount, really, we all have different budgets).

Support
This free WordPress theme is provided as is and, although I’d love to tweak it and make it perfect for each and every user out there, I simply can’t provide individual support for everybody. So if you have a general question, that you think could be helpful for other users too, please address your support question through the comments option below or head out to the official WP support forum. I will do my best to follow through.

hi

Just wanted to say thanks for the theme, it is so user friendly!!! I’m no css or php coder but I’ve been able to make the changes I want with no fuss, not like other themes I’ve found. I’ve started with making a custom blog version now I am using this theme as the base for my online portfolio, added gallery functions, made it look more like a static site and messed with some content layout hope to have this running soon. So thanks once more, love your work.

Is there a way to alter some of the code to get a 728×90 banner into the title header without screwing up the alignment?

I have been trying to figure this out for a couple of days but not getting anywhere. Thought I’d ask you before I screw everything up.

Thanks!

Thanks, Mike. I’ve just emailed you the theme files without the credits; let me know if they don’t get through. Best of luck!

when i install the theme there are already Widgets on the right side, how can i remove them so i can use only my widgets?

Reply

Sam December 28, 2009 at 11:37 am

Hi Daniel,
by adding your own widgets, the default ones will be replaced, except for the welcome message and recent post list. To take those out, go to the sidebar.php theme file and delete them manually.

Hi Sam,
I am creating a blogging platform and need to adapt BlackSplat for it. However, I need options for Sign In | Sign Up to be present as well in the theme. I just need the HTML, CSS and images only (not the PHP or .Net code.) Of course it would be mentioned that theme is created by you. Is this possible?
Thanks for consideration.
Regards,
Ankur

Reply

Sam January 25, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Hi Ankur,
unfortunately, I don’t have the html/css version of the theme; it was done right away as a WP theme.
Best of luck, let me know how it goes!

can you tell me how to remove the search box at the top of the theme?

Reply

Sam February 3, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Hi,
to do this, you need to manually modify the header.php file. In this file, find the “search” division and delete it. That should do it. Best of luck!

Thanks so much for this amazing theme! I’m currently using it right now on my blog. I have one concern though. I’m not sure if you still check these comments out but anyway, when I create a page, I can’t comment on the posts made on there. Is this a problem on my end or is it made like that? Any replies would be appreciated!

Reply

Sam March 24, 2010 at 10:27 am

Hi Alex,

comments are not included in the page.php theme file for this theme. It is however not very complicated to add. You can cut and paste it from the single.php file, for instance.

Hope this helps,
S

Loved your theme and have been using it for more than a year, ever since my blog went live.

I want to implement Google Custom Search but want to keep the default search box and the way search results are displayed right now. I don’t see a separate search.php or a searchpage.php file, only a searchform.php. Which file displays the search results?

Reply

Sam May 2, 2010 at 11:24 pm

Hi,
as is, the search results are displayed via the index.php theme file.

You can remove those manually in the sidebar.php theme file.

i have sent several messages and still no response

when i try to add a copyright to my footer in the blacksplat theme you created, it does not work???

Reply

sam August 18, 2010 at 5:23 pm

Hi. Apologies for that. It seems a certain number of comments are being filtered as spam by mistake. I had to take yours out of the spam box. To answer your question, there is no feature in that theme stopping you from modifying the footer. This section is associated to the footer.php theme file, which can be edited entirely.

Reply

JV August 19, 2010 at 2:09 pm

why is your theme encoded?

Reply

sam August 19, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Encoded? What do you mean?

Reply

JV August 19, 2010 at 2:16 pm

when i try to take edit the footer file, the entire footer is gone!!

JV August 19, 2010 at 2:16 pm

here is the footer code you have:

Reply

JV August 19, 2010 at 2:19 pm

i tried to add the code but it did not work

can i have your email address instead?

Reply

sam August 19, 2010 at 2:22 pm

You can try downloading the files again at http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/black-splat-wr.

The files are entirely editable from the WordPress theme editor. (or a text editor)

Can you share your url?

Reply

JV August 19, 2010 at 2:24 pm

i already did that

the problems started when i updated your theme to the newest version

Reply

JV August 19, 2010 at 2:30 pm

also, in the footer

what is with the acne thing?

here is my url: jvazjrsblog.com

Reply

sam August 19, 2010 at 2:34 pm

That acne link is not in the default theme files, we did not put it there. If you downloaded the theme from the directory, and did not modify it, it probably means that your installation is being hacked.

Reply

JV August 19, 2010 at 2:33 pm

i am currently using the 1.7 version

Reply

JV August 19, 2010 at 2:37 pm

how do i stop it from being hacked

Reply

JV August 19, 2010 at 2:45 pm

then i dont understand that when i updated to the 1.8 version of your theme, the problems started to happen

Reply

sam August 19, 2010 at 5:10 pm

If you suspect your hosting account of being hacked, you might wish to contact your host to investigate the issue. I have not included any malware in the theme, and I doubt that the guys at WordPress would be that careless (if that’s where you got it from). You might wish to try installing the theme again (actually, the version at http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/black-splat-wr is 1.8) and see if this incident is still happening. If you’re not using the latest WordPress version, you can update that as well.

one more question:

why is it that when i look at my blog, some of my navigation menu at the top does not show up?

underneath the home menu button, my disclaimer appears here instead of next to the “contact” button in the menu

Reply

sam August 20, 2010 at 6:06 pm

There is a maximum width for menu items to fit on the same line. If all items don’t fit in that width, the ones most to the right go underneath. So yeah, it looks better if they can all fit in the bar. I’m noticing that it’s appearing inline right now, not underneath, so you probably tweaked it to work out I guess…

Reply

JV August 21, 2010 at 1:14 pm

what if i removed the search box, would that work so that all of the items fit in the navigation menu?

Reply

JV August 24, 2010 at 1:54 pm

well??

what if i removed the search box, would that work so that all of the items fit in the navigation menu?

Reply

sam August 24, 2010 at 2:21 pm

Yes, that way you could increase the width of the menu, so it could do the trick.
