Function WordPress Theme

Alright, this theme is ready to go! (click on the thumbnail for a full-size screenshot)

For those familiar with my Motion theme, Function is similar in a few ways, such as the overall layout and the way it is coded. It is however different in a few others. Mainly: it uses jQuery for the menu (now 3 levels deep), it is light looking (not dark!), and it relies less on transparent features (hence less IE6 hacks), amongst other things…

The idea was to create a simple theme to use as a workbench for weblogs and online magazines.

I’ve built this theme while building a site about online stock trading for beginners, StockTradingOnline.net, which I am co-running and just launched recently. It can give you an idea of how tweaking the header can make a quick and effective customization.

*Please note that this live, customized demo site and the theme are slightly different – check out the full-scale screenshot. (or simply download it and try it out)

Enjoy!

I’m considering using your theme for my website. Would you be OK with me using it, but changing a few things around? Background image, a couple font changes, etc. I would obviously still leave you as the author, etc. Thanks–it really is an awesome theme!

Sam February 11, 2010 at 9:54 am

Thanks Chris. Yes, it is absolutely OK to customize it. I can send you the PSD of the header if you wish, it might help in customizing the background.

“Hey there!” :) I’ve just setup a wordpress.com blog using the Motion theme and been trying to figure out how to change the text in the top right which I notice is also on this newer theme, starting with the words “Hey there!”. It’s not exactly how I speak ;) is there any way to do it on the free wordpress.com version?

This is a pretty nice theme by the way, wish I could have it on the free wordpress.com blog :)

Thanks
Alex

Hi Alex,

that sentence can be modified using widgets, on the version of the theme I have released. The WordPress.com version might be slightly different; there are perhaps ‘theme options’ to look into under your admin panel.

Best,
Sam

Hi Sam,

Once again, amazing work. Your templates are so well coded it really makes customization easy. Thank you!

I’ll be using this one for a friend’s site, http://www.djopel.ca/

Could email me the PSD as well? Or possibly post it?

Big Cheers!

I´m thinking in to start a new blog based on this theme but I can´t find it in the Wordpress list. This will be available in the same way that Motion? Or I will need to download it from here and use it hosted in my own website? And them, how to be able to use the rest of WP funcionalities?

Thanks.

Hi,
this theme is not currently available for WordPress.com users; it is only available for users of the self-hosted WordPress version. Maybe it will be available at WordPress.com at some point, but I do not have control over that part. If you host your site yourself, I believe the functionalities are similar to WordPress.com, yes.
Best,

Hi Sam,

I´m going crazy to do something that I think that must be easy but have try many times without success. I will like to use also the Navigation style to post content sometimes (for titles or in some special situations) and I failed to do it. If I use as it is it moves the side bar and produces undesired changes, so I tried to recreate it. After try it a lot of times I decided to ask you for a way to do it.

How to use the Navigation style (with border, exactly as it is already) to write in the post conten area?

Cheers

Fantastic theme.

One tweak that I’m hoping you can help with. I’ve got a blog set up with lots of authors contributing. Can you add into the index or page file (or wherever necessary) a byline below the post title and above the date line, so that in any view (by category, individual post, etc) readers can see the author’s name?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Sam March 12, 2010 at 8:46 am

Hi,
that’s not a very hard tweak, it would involve modifying theme files slightly. You can find a little bit of info about it over at http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags. What’s your url?

Are you not interested in helping me?

Hi Sam, the blog in that I will like to use also the Navigation style to post content sometimes is this one: http://www.fresadora.es/blog/

I failed every time triying to adapt your CSS code. I lost the sidebar and have some other problems.

The other blog uses Motion and even if It´s in wordpress.com I´m taking avdantage of the potencial that I need. A great improvement over my previous theme and is a great design, the same than Function, You did a great work.

One question: How can I change the font size? I need really clear instructions because I’m reluctant to enter the brains with salad forks!

I really like the new template Function – it will be ideal for the sister site WoWART.ca. I’ll check it out. Soon as I sell a painting – you’ll have a donation! My pledge!

Thanks Marilyn! I’m happy you like the themes.

Font sizes are all defined in the css stylesheet. Depending on what you wish to modify exactly, you need to change the corresponding ‘font-size’ attribute manually.

Best of luck!

Hi Sam,

I am already using the Motion theme for my website. I plan to migrate my website from Motion to Function theme. I am also planning to buy a domain name to this end. Can I just upload the Function theme files to the new domain for my website. Is it as easy as that.

Thank you.

Hi,

I’m happy you like the theme, thanks.

To change the font size, you need to edit the CSS stylesheet according to which section you wish to modify. For instance, if you wish to make the text in the content bigger, you can modify this parameter:
.postcontent {
color: #fff;
margin: .8em 0;
font-size: 0.8em;
line-height: 1.5em;
}

Where you could modify “font-size:0.8em” to be higher (0.9em, 1em…). To make the fonts bigger site-wide, you could edit this:
body {
background: #000 url(images/bodybg.jpg) top center no-repeat fixed;
padding-bottom: 20px;
font-family: “Lucida Grande”,”Lucida Sans Unicode”,Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
text-align: center;
}

… by adding an attribute such as “font-size:1.1em”.

Hope this helps!
Sam

So if you take a look at my site (me.samsavoy.com), I customized it the way I want to, however I’m not a fan of the “double navigation bar.” Is there a way to put my Pages on the same grey navigation bar that Home and Blog are on? Is there a CSS edit? Thanks.

Sam June 14, 2010 at 6:20 am

Hi. To do so, you need to modify the markup a little bit, in the header.php theme file. I have made available a version of the theme to do that: http://stocktradingonline.net/downloads/Function_pdd.zip. Hope this helps…

Hi Sam,
I have two questions.
First is that I would like to have a summary of the post on the landing page, yet I have the full story. How to I have it post a summary?

Second, is I would like to set the order of my categories. I have a couple of plugins, but none have addressed the issue.
Any help is appreciated.
I am using Function and really like it. Great job!

Hi Rod,
1) have you tried using the “more” tag when editing an entry?
2) you might wish to try editing your menu manually, in the header.php theme file.
