Automatic WordPress Backup Has New Home

by Melvin Ram on January 21, 2010

We were recently asked by Matt Mullenweg over at WordPress / Automattic to not use the domain that contained their trademark “WordPress” in it or he would need to remove us from the WordPress directory.

Following a few email exchanges with Matt, I decided it was in the best interest of the plugin to move the official website into a directory of our main website. Though I am disappointed that we won’t get to utilize the awesome domain name of WordPressBackup.org, I understand Matt & Automattic’s point of view on the matter. They are building a business and need to protect their assets.

In any case, we’ve moved the website over to http://www.webdesigncompany.net/automatic-wordpress-backup. We’ll still be providing the same level of support as we have in the past and will likely be introducing a few new features to the website, such as a real support forum. In addition, we’ve got some exciting new features coming up soon for the plugin.

2010 will be a fantastic year for both AWB and for WordPress. I wish everyone continued success and hope to connect with you at some point.

Even if you had to change the domain name (that was a bit pretentious/ostentatious domain name), this plugin is a huge contribution to the whole WordPress community. I appreciate your efforts and I thank you for the time you put into this. Hope you don’t stop supporting it.

The plugin WP-DBManager, by Lester ‘GaMerZ’ Chan (http://lesterchan.net/portfolio/programming/php/#wp-dbmanager) can also automatically restore the DB from a backup. Maybe you can take a look at the code and merge some functionality, or even collaborate with the author (just an idea).

Once again, thanks for the plugin.

“the Restore functionality we’re building”
Didn’t really read that.

So, keep it up!

Yep, it’s almost ready. Just has a few kinks to work out.

I’ll be glad to test your new version as my new WP blog is currently in the testing stage (on another domain) itself.

I did install the plugin and I’ve tried the ‘backup now’ feature – it backed up everything but the database. Anything I can change in the settings so I get the database as well?

Also, where do I access my backup on Amazon S3?

Thanks for the plug-in.

Bit worried that it isn’t working for me as I don’t get a link after I “save changes and backup now” ??

Your manual backup has started. If it hasn’t yet, it will show up below once it’s completed the next time you view this page.

Download recent backups

I wonder if Matt Mullenweg was also concerned over the “Automatic” as well conflicting with his “Automattic”

Either way – I’m stoked to have found this plugin… great way to back up clients sites to S3 for safe/secure backup storage…

I’ve not installed / used it yet but I’ll be giving it a go shortly… it’s EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for…

When I search the WordPress plugin directory for “Automatic WordPress Backup” I don’t find you… and your download link isn’t working either… please tell me you’re still alive!
